Frequently Asked Questions

Hello!

As much as we would love to hear from you, please take a moment to see if your question can be answered below.

Youth Programs

  • Over the years, we have come across plenty of 4 year old students who do exceptionally well in our group classes. If your child has expressed a genuine interest then you are more than welcome to enroll them into the class. If you are unsure how your child will perform, then we would recommend scheduling a private lesson to assess their interest and level of attentiveness.

Private lessons can be accommodated wherever is most convenient for the family, including your home driveway, local basketball court/ school blacktop (recommended,) and/or skatepark. Lessons are offered at $65/ hour ($40/person/hour for groups) and all the necessary equipment can be provided at no extra cost - just let us know if a skateboard and/ or safety gear is needed.

To schedule a lesson, please email us your preferred date/ location and we will do our best to get you paired with an experienced instructor.

  • Equipment needed for skateboarding:

A helmet (bicycle helmet okay) knee pads, elbow pads, and wrist guards (optional.)

If you do not have equipment , no worries! Safety gear can be provided for students at no extra cost. Just let us know what might be needed and we’ll be sure to get you covered!

  • They sure are!

Private lessons can be accommodated wherever is most convenient for you, including your home driveway, local park, school blacktop (recommended,) and/or skatepark. All the necessary equipment, such as skateboards and safety gear can be provided at no extra cost.

Private lessons are offered at $65/hour and private groups can be accommodated at $40/person/ hour. Lessons are commonly offered on weekends but our team is flexible and should be able accommodate during the week as well.

Ramps and other obstacles are not included in private lessons, (nor are they necessary,) but they can be requested for $65/ session. If ramps become of interest then we would recommend holding a class at one of these family-friendly facilities; Lake Cunningham Skatepark, West Evergreen Skatepark, Campbell Skatepark, or Santa Clara Skatepark.

To schedule a lesson, email us your preferred date/ location and we’ll do our best to get you accommodated!

  • Absolutely!

We have a team of coaches that are amazing with all students, including those with special needs.

In our experience, students with cognitive disabilities have done well in our group lessons, however, depending on the student (and their particular needs) private lessons can be scheduled to better accommodate the pace and skill of a person.

  • Definitely!

We are happy to set up small ramps and obstacles anywhere in San Jose or the surrounding areas.

Along with ramp set-up, our instructors (1:5 instructor to student ratio) will host a one hour group lesson in which case fundamentals and introductory challenges will be offered.

The cost per student is $40/ Hr per student - skateboards and safety equipment included as needed.

As always, please let us know if you have further questions or suggestions with respect to the special day. We’re happy to help any way we can!

General questions

  • There's definitely quite a bit to consider when purchasing a skateboard but we'll do our best to break it down for you!

    Considerations:

As you may know, skateboards can be purchased online from various retailers, however, we would recommend going into a skate shop to view your options and personally customize your first skateboard.

Your local skate shop will help you piece together a skateboard (also known as a "complete") from the various components a shop offers.

Oftentimes, families will purchase a skateboard online only to realize that another higher-quality skateboard will be needed to better suit a persons preference and skill.

    Deck

If a person is genuinely interested in skateboarding, we would recommend a "popsicle" shaped skateboard between 7.25” - 7.75” (inches in width) for someone between 4 - 14 years old and 7.8” - 8.25” for individuals 15 and up.

The length of a skateboard deck is oftentimes proportionate to the width so don't worry too much about the length, just the width! The board widths mentioned will provide a beginner with enough surface area to safely maneuver and still have room to grow into.

Popsicle shaped skateboards are the symmetrical "trick boards" commonly seen around the world. These boards are the best for ramps and you can customize the components making this board type versatile.

    Wheels & Trucks

Another component a beginner will appreciate on their skateboard is a set of softer wheels.

Having softer wheels helps minimize vibrations by absorbing the small pebbles and cracks we inevitably roll over.

The last component we would highly recommend are Independent Trucks. Trucks are the steering components of a skateboard and the brand 'Independent' is known for having some of the best trucks because of the zero break-in period needed.

Other truck brands require quite a bit of breaking-in which takes away from the immediate enjoyment and functionality of the skateboard.

    Other Components

All other components (grip tape, hardware, and bearings) are preference based and the lowest priced goods will still be of great quality from a skateshop.

Some shops we would recommend in the South Bay are Faithful Skate Shop (mobile based out of Sunnyvale,) NC Board Shop in Los Gatos (most options,) Wheelbite Skateshop (newer store,) or Circle-A skate shop & coffee (downtown San Jose.)

The shops mentioned are family friendly and identically priced.

  • Equipment can be purchased online or through your local skate shop (recommended!)

Here are some local (South Bay Area) shops worth checking out!

Red Curbs Skate Shop (Fremont, CA)

Wheel-Bite Skate Shop (San Jose, CA)
